According to its supporters, HTML5 is a web based standard that can be used to create cross platform applications that can run anywhere. Experts say that HTML5 has great potential and will become a major technology used by gaming sites in the future. Currently most games are powered by flash technology and still powers the applications used by millions of gamers every day. Things will not change overnight. Currently there are over 100,000 games available powered by flash, including internet bingo games, while there are only a few hundred games powered by HTML5. There are 800 HTML5 users compared to 2 billion Flash users.
HTML5 has a long way to go to gain worldwide domination. HTML5 is supported by 40% of web browsers while Flash is supported by 99% of all web browsers. The compatibility issues would have to be overcome before HTML5 could gain widespread acceptance. For Facebook gamers a majority of games are powered by Flash although some are being developed using HTML5. The one exception on Facebook is ‘Words with Friends’ which uses HTML5.
In March 2011, Mozilla VP of products Jay Sullivan said that HTML5 would eventually replace flash, but so far the massive transition has not taken place. Gaming technology has evolved rapidly, and not too long ago, online bingo players had to download game software before playing. Eventually flash technology was adopted by the industry, and provided players with no download bingo games. Even better, flash gave game developers the ability to create stunning graphics and animations. Today most online bingo games use flash or java. Flash and Java provide players with convenience and ease of use. Today very few bingo sites require players to download any game software.
An increase in the use of smart phones and other mobile devices has created a new sector of the gaming industry. Mobile bingo and casino gaming are now the driving forces behind industry expansion. Late last year Adobe, said that they would not be developing any new flash applications. Adobe added that the company will continue to provide security and bug updates for flash programs. Some gaming experts believe that HTML5 will provide a better solution for the delivery of browser based gaming content. The use of HTML5 is of particular interest to mobile gaming companies.
Danny Winokur, Adobe’s Vice President, stated “HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively. This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms. We are excited about this, and will continue our work with key players in the HTML community, including Google, Apple, Microsoft and RIM, to drive HTML5 innovation they can use to advance their mobile browsers.” At present one thing is certain: the transition from flash to HTML5 will not take place overnight.

The ‘sandbox’ mode, in which players use simple building blocks to construct complex environments, can be played on social networks and mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.
